[September 2024] Korean Progress Update

What’s up guys?

I’m here to report my progress in Korean for the month of September.

To help you out, I’ll tell you the conclusion as early as now – I did little Korean this month.

That’s because I’m juggling Korean alongside Spanish. And this is what takes away the time from my Korean immersion. I’ve yet to balance the two languages, which is driven by my current motivation for the moment.

If you’re still here, you might want to know what happened. In which case, feel free to continue reading this update.

September Update

The immersion goal I’ve set for myself from the previous update in August is simply an hour a day.

Honestly, I haven’t done much Korean overall for September. The good news is I found a new tracker where I migrated my stats. The app is rich in features, including a panel filled with stats and charts, plus a way to customize the design of my activity tracker.

To sum it up, my total Korean time for September is 2 hours and 42 minutes. This averages out to 5.4 minutes per day.

September Korean Update

There were days that I didn’t log in the time. It’s either I completely forgot to immerse, or there wasn’t much time to log (such as 1 or 2 minutes).

Despite the low activity, I’m not really that worried. I can rekindle my motivation with Korean any time I want, though nowadays I intend to put more time into Spanish.

I find it easier to get back at Korean because of these reasons:

Plenty of YouTube Content – I never miss seeing Korean content every day. Whenever I check YouTube, the algorithm will tend to display Korean video content, which helps me access them easier.

More Korean Everywhere – compared to when I first started in 2011, nowadays it’s easier to see Korean influence in my country (Philippines) because there’s more Korean marts, convenience stores, restaurants, boutiques, and events related to Korean culture. Not to mention K-pop, K-drama, and K-movies.

Talking to Korean Natives – here in the Philippines, there’s a better chance I would encounter a Korean native than a Spanish native. If I just overhear a Korean conversation, all of a sudden I have a tendency to return to immersing Korean.

Potential Opportunities – over the long term there’s always a chance I could attract opportunities to use my Korean. The better I get at the language, I believe those opportunities will show up more frequently.

Goals for October

That said, I’m never going to stop learning Korean. Even if it means crawling in total input hours.

My focus is on maintaining consistency by finding ways to insert the language while my Spanish is building momentum. Therefore my goals are the following:

1 Hour a Day – the bar won’t come down for my daily input, since YouTube is filled with recommendations for me to access. And it’s not like I still struggle to understand Korean, I’m doing pretty well with most videos now.

That’s it for now. I don’t want to pressure myself too much for what little time I have in the language.

Let me know in the comments, how is your Korean? Are you doing a lot these days, or are you on a motivational low like I do?
